Planting Models Overview

This new century requires passion and courage in reaching others for CHrist. Church planting must be a chief focus of evangelism and missions in this day. In order for the church to continue, there needs to be an awakening.  Often, that means what we did to start churches in the twentieth century might not work in the twenty-first century. Our prayer is that God will raise up a generation of apostolic people like the apostle Paul who will preach Christ and plant evangelical, healthy churches across North America.

While some planters see church planting models as mere myth, others see the validity of having examples to study.  Regardless of the debate, there appears to be at least six areas and 14--21 designs that a new church could consider as they begin new work.

For a more inclusive look at the broad models or strategies, consider reading Starting Reproducing Congregations by Daniel Sanchez, Ebbie Smith & Curtis Watke.

Ten Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Select a Sponsorship Model, Church Design, & People Group:

  1. What are my particular gifts when it comes to planting a new work?

  2. Who are the people I am trying to touch?

  3. What human, material, and financial resources are available?

  4. What adjustments must I make to the sponsorship model and church design to help the planting effort become successful?

  5. What degree of freedom is realistic within this framework?

  6. Are there any characteristics within the sponsorship model and church design that help or distract from the plant's eventual success?

  7. Have I made any unrealistic assumptions due to my passion and optimism?

  8. Will this church design work in the community I have chosen?

  9. What are the basic assumptions that move this church design?

  10. Have I written down a list of strengths and weaknesses regarding the sponsorship model and church design?  Have I found the strengths outweigh the liabilities?

Remember the selection of the right sponsorship model, church design, and people group is critical. Even though the plant usually reflects the personality and passion of the planter, proper selection of these elements is crucial to assuring the church will fit into the culture in which the new work is being started.
